An Optical Assistant, also known as an Optical Retail Assistant, is a healthcare professional working in the optical industry. They provide support to optometrists and assist customers in selecting, fitting, and dispensing eyeglasses or contact lenses based on their prescriptions and preferences.

QUALIFICATIONS

Entrants usually possess GCSEs/S grades. Training is typically received on-the-job, supplemented by study towards vocational qualifications. NVQs/ SVQs are available in relevant areas and at various levels, and apprenticeships may be available.

TASKS

  • Assist customers in selecting eyeglass frames or contact lenses based on their prescription, face shape, and style preferences..
  • Adjust and fit eyeglass frames to customers' faces, ensuring comfort and proper alignment..
  • Provide information on various lens options, coatings, and materials, helping customers make informed decisions..
  • Verify eyeglass prescriptions and ensure accuracy before processing orders..
  • Process orders for eyeglasses or contact lenses, including taking measurements and submitting orders to laboratories..
  • Operate lens-cutting and edging equipment to customize lenses based on prescription and frame specifications..
  • Provide instruction on the insertion, removal, and care of contact lenses for customers new to lens wear..
  • Handle transactions, including processing payments, insurance claims, and providing receipts..
  • Schedule appointments for eye examinations and follow-up visits with optometrists..
  • Monitor and manage inventory of eyeglass frames, contact lenses, and optical accessories..
