JOB DESCRIPTION

An HGV Driver, also known as a Heavy Goods Vehicle Driver, is responsible for operating large goods vehicles to transport goods or materials over long distances. This role involves driving heavy goods vehicles, such as lorries or articulated trucks, and ensuring the safe and timely delivery of cargo.

QUALIFICATIONS

No formal academic entry qualifications are required. The LGV test incorporates a medical examination, theory test and assessed road driving. LGV drivers of vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and over require a Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence). The minimum age for LGV driving after obtaining the qualification is 18 years. NVQs/SVQs, other vocational courses and apprenticeships relevant to this occupation are available at various levels.

  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle..
  • Interact with customers or warehouse personnel in a professional and courteous manner..
  • Handle delivery-related inquiries or issues..
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, customers, or warehouse personnel..
  • Relay information regarding delays, route changes, or other relevant details..
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on the HGV, such as checking fluid levels and tire pressure..
  • Report any mechanical issues for timely repairs..
  • Stay updated on industry regulations, traffic laws, and safety protocols..
  • Participate in training sessions to enhance driving skills and knowledge..
